Amon Acid - Paradigm Shift Album Review - 07 December 2020

One of our favourites here at Last Stop Sounds, recently signed to Regain Records with their latest album Paradigm Shift.

It begins with the ominous and aptly named one minute or so of doom laded guitar riffs, synths and demonic chanting entitled ‘Intro’ This blurs into the high voltage crashing guitar chords of ‘Monarch’. There’s more than a bit of Doom about this track from its savage riffing power chords and beyond the grave vocals. It gathers speed and intensity with the guitar herding a whole horde of synths and noises as if toward the graveyard and throwing out lyrics containing phrases like ‘oh baby, you know what I mean, when it comes to pain, you’re my Queen’.

Distinctly Grecian sounding strings starts ‘Alien King’ off before dropping suddenly into power chords reminiscent of an alternative universe Black Sabbath.

Amon Acid are bringing their doom to the fore on this album, ’Overlord’ surrounds its monolithic power chord riff with synths and soundscapes. Its dark and compelling stuff that many a psych head and doom metaller are going to enjoy equally. Some nice Eastern riffs on keys and guitar add to the heady mix.

Fear of Space with its hypnotic disjointed drum pattern and more spaced out feel still keeps the big and slow feel but with less overt doom and more ambient feel.

The albums title track ‘Paradigm Shift’ starts in Hawkwind bleeps and beeps territory then slowly the evil power chords fire up over a slow and steady bass. A few minutes in this gets a suddenly kick as the whole track shifts up a gear, not in tempo but with layers of, well, musical darkness. There’s more than a hint of Black Sabbath by the time this track reaches its peak. More than a knowing nod but still distinctly Amon Acid treading their own path.

Amon Acid have come of age it seems, some experimental music early on as demonstrated on the previous album has given way to a more constructed sound with more of a central idea. Not a million miles away from what they sounded like a year or so ago but developed and worked on. They sound good and ready to take the music world on.
