Bad Breeding and Ohmns at Quarry, Liverpool - 06 July 2022

A well attended Wednesday gig at Quarry. The lights are dim, the sound is loud and the bands are worth a mid-week outing. Coughin’ Vicars have had to pull out due to some of the band testing positive for Covid but the pull of OHMNS and Bad Breeding still makes it a worthwhile venture.

I haven’t seen Ohmns for a few years (probably something to do with that plague thing) and the lineup is slightly different with a new (to me) drummer and a bit of a change in emphasis in the sound. They still hit up repetitive grooves and are capable of going off into more experimental musical spaces but it seems tighter and more focussed. Their garage roots are more to the fore, the seams (to me) to be a lot more emphasis on vocals and the have defined songs thats have a Stooges/MC5 feel to them. I like that they have evolved since last I saw them and I like what they have evolved into as well!

They are loud, brash, dissonant, confident and tight as hell, I'm hoping they play more gigs locally sooner rather than later.

Bad Breeding are a band I’ve heard a fair bit about but never seen before. They go from quietly preparing for the gig in an unassuming manner to a full on punk/thrash/hardcore assault. Fronted by a vocalist who spends most of his time off the stage eyeball to eyeball with the audience and a maelstrom of noise from a locked in drums and bass rhythm section with a guitarist who adds layers of almost psych type noise on top of a brutal rhythm guitar delivery they provide a welcome wake up shock to the system at a midweek gig.

Its head on stuff, confrontational and the lyrics that can be made out are about the deficiencies of the modern state and lack of caring for others. It’s all combined in a passionate and uncompromising 40 or so minutes of musical aggression that never lets up.

Moonfrog promotions seem everywhere at the moment with lots of varied gigs and for this one they combined with the welcome return of Anti-Pop Records, great gig and hopefully plenty more to come from these folk.
