Birdcage Review, Albert Dock, 05 September 2020

How often do you see big birdcages in Liverpool? Not very. Thankfully this birdcage offered us some great acts just outside the Martin Luther King building. The weather was unpredictable, the wind was blowing over and under our feet, but it didn’t stop the beat. Nicola Hardman started the proceedings. An artist who creates worlds with just a few chords and powerful vocals. Those both unfamiliar and those subscribed to her work, feeling the joy within her songs. Hardman masters both poetry and song, as represented in ‘Unicycle to Space’. One felt literally lifted, floating as it were – flying directly to the cosmos in the present.

Next up was KiAnn, a wonderful artist who, like Hardman, combines many forms of sounds and text. The meticulous dexterity of Ki Ann’s songs elaborates on this point. You get hip-hop, soul and electronica all fused together nicely. This fusion provides a well-constructed foreground for some incredible vocal flexibility. Next up Sonic Duo, consisting of poet/singer Lucy Pickavance’s words and Carolynn Carrs incredible rhythmic backing called to your inner being. They tell stories of lust, desire and comfort. Their incredible beats and words truly strike at something important. That is the message of connection and love.

The Jubilee Stompers are an altogether different outfit. These guys and gals take us back to a time of pure rhythm. This band cover generations and even take on classic music - albeit in a very post-modern way. They make you want to dance in the rain. Well worth checking this extremely entertaining group of highly talented musicians.

Thanks to The Birdcage Stage and We Want Women and thank you Liverpool for letting us peer into lit fire of pure artistic expression. Thank you for reminding us all, under lockdown, to aspire, dance and connect with ourselves.
