Not many promoters keep the lineup and venue secret but Ivan Thunders/Liverpool Psychedelic Society does just that. Details of where to be and who is on are sent out only an hour before the show.
So we find ourselves at the fabulous Hobo Kiosk awaiting a small intimate performance from Emma Tricca supported by local psych luminaries Dominic Lewington and Ivan Thunders himself taking a break from performing as guitarist in Thee Lucifer Sams.
Ivan opens the show, it's a short set punctuated with ironic remarks such as ‘this set is influenced by Bob Dylans singing’ and this song is a bout life’. Ivan has no set songs and lyrics, he prefers to alter some basic chord structures and improvise much of the lyrics as he goes and he produces a spacey ethereal sound that floats around your head and contains much melody and personal views sung quietly.
Do
minic Lewington has recently been onstage with his rather spectacular Domino’s band - the first time in a full lineup he says for many years but he’s no slouch solo either. He delivers a measured and controlled performance with intricately composed songs and the ability to hold on a single chord, repeating it almost endlessly until he releases the tension and moves forward with the songs. A friendly and inclusive stage manner, slowly delivered but intricate songs and a great and distinctive performance.
The main event, Emma Tricca makes jokes about not telling jokes and then when she unleashes her fine finger picked melodies and fragile yet strong voice she tells stories of life. There’s worlds in her words and the universe dances to her melodies as she entrances us. The skill of her finger picking on the acoustic is matched by her melodic voice and Emma produces a star turn worthy of being the secret surprise headliner.
An excellent night by Ivan and Delia and Tristan are always the most welcoming hosts at the fantastic Hobo Kiosk - a true gem of a bar.
