Gig Review - Aaron Ellis, Kookercheeks at the Zanzibar - 20 March 2022

The sound in the Zanzibar seems ok tonights,. Thought we’d get that in ahead of the review. After some questionable noise last time we went there thought it just fair to mention. We had a chat to the sound guy, he acknowledged the issues he’s up against (essentially the venue is a tin box) but responded that the PA was a good one and that it’s up to the job. Definitely an improvement though and sounded good. Hopefully the Zanzibar can reclaim some of its past glory.

Kookercheeks are some rogues from Wales I’m told but can’t find any further information. They played some dirty sounding rock, you could hear the guitar band influences and they do a fine job of playing tight, sounding loud and bouncing around. Some really good drums and excellent lead guitar work keep it all on track. Good songs, well played, like to see these again.

Aaron Ellis and Friends are like a fine wine, they improve with time (and other assorted cliches). But they do. This gig sees a confident band taking their framework of material and jamming it out effortlessly on stage before diving back into the main core of the song. They weave cool psych melodies in and out of intricate rhythms, its sparse one minute then the band swells musically to fill it all out reaching some lovely crescendo’s before tapering into silence. This band know how to pace things, have the musical ability to deliver and the songs they hang it on are well written and often highly emotionally charged.

Formed by Tabby in 2019 on the Wirral, Merseyside, Shako are one of those bands with a catchy punk attitude and sound of first wave punk from the 70’s, melodic tunes with a deep sense of what’s happen
