Gig Review: Birdman Cult at The Louisiana, Bristol - 31 August 2022

This is a big sounding band, they stride around the gloom on stage at Bristols famous Louisiana venue and seem all knowing. The vocalists exudes the same louche charm ads maybe a young Jack Nicholson and the band seem to have all arrived from gigs with their other bands such is the collision of styles. Musically it collides well and you can hear different influences writ large across the way they play but this adds flavour, adds to the sense of ‘knowing’ that you get from the band, as if they were in on the secrets of the universe that the audience could only guess at.

The music sounds large, like it belongs in a stadium rather than a small venue. The drums break free from the confines of motorik limitations when needed. There are quiet parts along with full on rocked out moments, and a darkness of temperament led by the slightly from beyond the grave sounding vocals. They rock and disturb a little and always the downbeat vocals find an infectious dark melody.

After this gig I started listening to the band on Bandcamp (links below) I’ve got a feeling that sometime soon I’ll buy something. I reckon they knew that.
