Gig Review - Dawn Ray'd, Ku Di Grah, All In Vain The Hunx and Freddy Ruhrland at QUARR Y - 09/04/22

Quarry has been around since just on the start of Covid, unfortunate timing for a new venue but now we are seeing some normality this great sounding venue is starting to shift through the gigs and events. Todays is put on by the Dead Sounds folk and is to raise money for the anti-Grand National.

Freddy Rurhland strums an acoustic guitar and sings songs about being drunk whilst drinking. The performance though isn’t drunk. He seems sharp and tuneful if single minded in his choice of subject and full of wry observations about his choice of poison.

All in Vain bring on more acoustic and folky sounding punk. They are musically upbeat and almost protest song like in their performance with some truly great musical skills on show and a soaring violin that caught my ear surprise and brought on a smile.

It gets louder and faster as The Hunx hit us with their first appearance on stage for some time. They are still punk as hell and still there’s a small amount of Motorhead that sneaks in. Breakneck speed drums, bass and guitars with shouty vocals from Liverpool favourite Skatepunk Boys.

It gets darker as Ku Di Grah hit the stage. Hit being the right word. These sons of Black Flag and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (amongst many influences we picked up) are full on. Drums, bass and guitar are locked solid and provide a platform for their vocalist to scream ontop of with abandon. This is tight and hellish, and frankly wonderful.

Just as we though it couldn’t get any louder Dawn Ray’d start up. These Metal warriors take their politics as seriously as their music and provide us with a 30 minute sermon on how to be one of the best bands around. The wild drums and savage guitar with frantic vocals dips into wistful moments as a violin comes out. One of the best bands around.

Formed by Tabby in 2019 on the Wirral, Merseyside, Shako are one of those bands with a catchy punk attitude and sound of first wave punk from the 70’s, melodic tunes with a deep sense of what’s happen
