Gig Review: Hillhouse, Hoonose, Def Neon and Pray for Mojo at The Outpost 23 April 2022

Massive thanks to Philip from Hoonose for the invite to this bloody good gig at Outpost Liverpool. Four great acts, including a one I’d not seen before.

Arriving to see Pete Hillhouse, a local lad, on stage, smashing out acoustic folky punk, waxing lyrical at the establishment, ending with a "tribute" to our "esteemed" leader, with a few punters’ ad libbing their own sentiments! A great set.

Hoonose, a duo, Philip and Olivia, have this unmistakable chemistry on stage which just flows thru the whole set, clearly showing the fun and joy they share when playing. At the same time they are sending out important social message in their music. I’ve seen these a few times now, a great band, stonking guitar work from Phil complimented by an incredible drummer in Liv.

I saw DEF NEON at the end of January, so I knew what to expect. I had a brief chat with Emily who was a tad concerned about some of the electronic instruments so nerves were a bit stretched. Hailing from Wales, this is a duo not to miss, always putting on a great show. Once on stage, Mickey and Emily gave it their all, ear splitting synth sounds hailing back decades, bringing back memories of the 80's, easy to see the influences these two have gleaned, yet putting their own mark on an amazing set. Electronic, jazzy, punk, synth rock, deep bass line with voice effects throughout. Nerves clearly set aside as both get into the zone and have the crowd in the palm of their hands. Finishing off the set with a Rage Against the Machine classic, the whole crowd singing along until the end where the applause was plain to hear. Yet again, they showed how to do it.

Pray for Mojo came on. I had no idea who these were. A group of young lads from Warrington, doing what they clearly love, and are extremely good at, playing exquisite music with finesse, talent and passion. According to their bio " Merging psychedelia with a range of sounds including garage rock, doom, prog and more, the bands churning fuzz laden guitar and hypnotic driving rhythms, time changes and range of soundscape have merged to create its own soundtrack and ode to Mojopia." They produced an absolutely stunning set, each and every band member on top form, perfect timing, a range of musical prowess I have not seen in a while. Vocally strong, instrumentally sublime, together making a perfect symphony of sound combining numerous musical genres, with a stage presence to match. This band deserve all the praise they get. Fantastic to see such a talented group.

The usual thanks to Outpost Liverpool for being the great hosts they always are, thanks to Ian and his magic skills on the sound and again to Phil from Hoonose for putting together an excellent night of live music. cheers n ciders!
