Gig Review - Hoonose, Decades of Delusion, Kid Clumsy, Liability’s - Boulevard Wigan - 12 March 2022

Hoonose are a duo tonight, but the vocals/guitar and drums lineup is big enough. The band combine some infectious sub-punk noise and catchy melodies with some of the best lyrics I’ve heard in a while. The words seem very important to this band, they are obviously crafted and deal with subjects from oil running out to jobs you thought you’d have when you were younger when careers seemed like a possibility. The tribal-esque drumbeats fill the rest of the void giving them a fuller sound than most duos and the rapport between the band engenders a genuine warmth thats felt in the audience.

Decades of Delusion are here to point out some of the delusions they are named after. A direct punk take on protest songs. ‘This is wrong’, vocalist Jori points out in song form, but more importantly she suggests ways we could put things to rights. Throw in some excellent lead guitar work, a bass that complements the riotous drums and provides a real powerhouse rhythmically as well as sharp as cut glass rhythm guitar this is a tight band with something to say.

I’d heard of Kid Klumsy but tonight, due to many last minute lines changes as Covid seems to raise its presence on the gig circuit again, I am watching them. The are upbeat, fast, catchy as hell and very very funny. Their banter with the crowd is sharp but never nasty, its all good fun and adds a personal element to the bands performance. It’s also unpredictable. A guitarist snaps a string, no waiting here, jumps straight over some of the audience and heads for the spare guitar in the changing room (posh this Boulevard place), as he returns the band has not missed a beat, they adapt and carry on. They make it sound easy but this is a skilful band, doing what they do well.

Liabilitys have the hookworm of the day. I’ve had ‘Two onto One’ going through my head for days. They are a ska influenced pop-punk band or maybe not. One minute they skank away then throw in a big chorus the next there’s a more straightforward rock bordering on metal thing going on. This diversity of sound, with well written songs and an ability to play well. And yeah ‘There was two onto one, and I still won, two onto one, and I still won’, infectious!

Not the best turnout I’ve seen but amazing that after all the last minute cancellations from bands, KDS Promotions still managed to put on a top line-up.
