Gig Review - Modern Nature at Future Yard - 05 May 2022

Modern Nature slip quietly onto the stage and with barley a nod to each other begin to play. Its subtle, low fi and yet complex pieces of music they play. They strike me as being nearer to a jazz band in concept than a rock band but its not jazz thats being played (at least not in a conventional sense). There is musical excellence on display but its kept down to a minimum and their sound is not overly fussy but incredibly precise.

The band paint gorgeous and serene soundscapes with perfect tones from their instruments chiming in at perfect times in their songs and occasional hushed vocals. Its tender and haunting and a real joy to just listen to in silence. The audience tonight at Future Yard is the quietest Ive seen outside of those specialist Folk type nights were chatter is frowned upon but here its not a ritualistic quiet but a more contemplative one, letting the music wash over you and engendering a feeling of letting go and getting back to (modern) nature in some way.
