Gig Review: Moscow Death Brigade, Asfixia Social and Old Radio at Quarry, Liverpool - 02 August 2022

Dead Sound Promotions keep on putting on the alternative alternative gigs, a lot of them are be based at the rather good Quarry venue located well off the beaten track under the railway arches off the North Docks area of Liverpool. It’s a great venue, with great a sound system that they know how to use. Fortunately those who want to find it do and there’s a great crowd tonight on a Tuesday for what promises to be a great lineup with for me the first time I’ve seen Moscow Death Brigade. First though there are two other bands that have a great reputation and followed by a DJ set from Tokky horror folk. Its a Tuesday, what have you got to lose?

Old Radio haven’t been out much as a band lately but they are in high spirits which translates to a joyous performance that the band appear to enjoy as much as the audience. They power through their ska infused set, blasting through their danceable verses and then exploding into their full on powerful and charged choruses. They have a knack of switching modes quickly and abruptly from catchy melodies into a full on rollercoaster full on singalong sections that can take your breath away. The political messages are still at the front and songs about ‘Don’t give kids guns’ make sense, and are delivered with conviction and passion.

Asfixia Social are from Brazil and their mixture of heavy and ska influenced music, one minute full on guitar solos and the next brass lead interludes. It’s a fascinating mix and their sound changes abruptly from Rage Against the Machine to ska with some Hendrix thrown in. They know how to use their fantastic musical skills to produce some great songs that catch the ear and get people dancing. Despite the range of styles their eclectic mix of musical sources is melded perfectly into one Asfixia sound and everything is happily uptempo and grooves along.

Then it gets quiet for a while before a laptop and two singers rip into a rabble rousing set from Moscow Death Brigade. This seems to be musical terrorism, its in your face and making demands, the political and musical merge together to for one breathtaking performance that just carries everyone (and everything) along with it. The beats are hard, hypnotic and the backing music matches the almost shouted vocals. You get to know their views on the world as they progress, they (rightly) proclaim that they are not extreme but simply respecting others. The crowd are as one, with them and dancing to their music.
