Its been years getting here this gig, originally scheduled before covid landed and rescheduled a number of times before finally, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason brings his re-envisaged version of the early(ish) years to the stage.
We have a lineup that includes Guy Pratt who’s trod the boards with everyone from Whitesnake via Iggy Pop to, well, Pink Floyd and Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet. Mason wants to give a wider audience to Floyd material from before Dark Side of the Moon and this tour is named the Echoes Tour after the 20 odd minute track from Meddle which they play in its entirety.
Kemp is a great guitarist and whilst visiting Gilmours style he does provide a fresh insight to the material. The other guitarist Lee Harris performs a stand out role in the band providing much cohesiveness and showing a great command of all the material.
We have ‘Set the controls for the heart of the sun’ alongside earlier Barrett era ‘See Emily Play’. At one point Mason announces that he hasn’t gigged in Liverpool since 1974 and the last time he’d been in tonights venue (the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall) it was 1968. He asks ‘were any of the audience there for that one’, the answer is a substantial part of 4the audience had been there in 1968.
They end on a up-lifting and spirited version of Bike and its been a convincing revisit to some olde classic Floyd, well worth the 2 year plus wait.
