Hegarty exist on those musical borders where they define themselves as as Scouse and Country. Yet limiting themselves is a touch unfair when they turn out truly enjoyable songs such as The Cloudwalker.
After a week of listening (as we do here) to hardcore punk and playing Slayer and Motorhead albums on 78rpm (y’know, just to give them a bit more bite) it seems we are not averse to some gentler, more wistful and melodic sounds.
The Cloudwalker begins gently, with a rhythmic setting of the scene and then an extended, even countryish guitar solo, that sets up the main melody. Its all played in an understated but not subdued manner, it all serves the song just right.
When David Hegarty starts singing, we are transported musically to walk amongst the clouds with him. He has a voice full of yearning, a way of interpreting lyrics melodically and a hoarseness to his voice that suits the song and its subject matter.
This is a song for dreamers, for those with ‘nothing left to hold’, perhaps written about a time after the haziness of a personal storm and put delicately and simply were others may lyrically confuse. Its directness is one of its charms.
It’s played by ace musicians and topped off with that sublime voice. Its full of killer melodies and hooks, and an ending just on the right side of anthemic. Its crept from my ‘too review’ pile of music into my current playlist without me being aware of the transition. Excellent song.
