The gig starts with Chris Heath in his guise as Mr Badaxe. His act involves lots of wild strumming of an acoustic guitar, plenty of swearing and a lot of insightful observations about those in charge of us all. Can’t fault his accuracy there especially with the abundance of expletives. He also acts as a compere and introduces all the other bands throughout the night which is a pleasant change from just guessing who’s on next.
The White Ribbons are a nice jolt to the system Here’s a band that are really technically proficient and also have that ability to bring out an emotional response in the audience. There’s a few of their songs that make you think hard, those with an anti violence message and especially anti violence against women with a truly touching reference to the Sophie Lancaster killing and their tribute to David Bowie was heartfelt.
Hoonose keep getting our attention, firstly by playing nearly every gig we go to and secondly by being excellent. Their punk/folk crossover (the description does not do justice) contains as much food for thought as The White Ribbons and we thoroughly approve of their pro-environmental stance. Loud guitars, sharp lyrics and tribal drums.
Kid Klumsy, a big noise fun machine, Punk as hell but warm and friendly. They can’t half play and are an incredibly tight band who make it all look like its a pleasant mistake when it comes off but this just masks their superb musicianship and song writing ability. Loud, fast, upbeat and funny, a great end to any night.
