It's a gig, seems like a long time since I’ve attended an actual gig, just as a punter waiting to watch some great bands put on a show. The Society of Losers always good for a cracking night of top bands have taken over the Kazimier Cloakroom and there’s a not to be missed lineup of groups to watch.
I love Kin, something about their grungy dark music appeals to me. Tonight it's no exception, they are on form and hungry to play. The trio power through a set as if it was only yesterday that they played last. The Covid enforced gap hasn’t diminished their sound and the full on noise storm they unleash is, well, music to my ears. They do aggression and volume jumps well but as ever its the strange rhythmic sections of their music, repeating musical phrases and swamping the audience with a surging drums led build ups that just make me smile. And hell, those drums are just fantastic.
Infants inhabit a similar sonic world to Kin, albeit more off kilter. There’s an unsettled feeling you get when watching Infants. They disturb, their songs are jagged and edgy, full of passion yet strangely isolating. It's an amazing trick to pull this off inside 30 minutes of noise.
Soup are new to me and a revelation. Different from the previous bands they have a more post punk funk thing going on, someone said Wire and I was hitting Gang of Four comparisons. They end their set with a cover of Psycho killer and it all falls into place. The mainly spoken vocals break into tunefulness at all the right moments and lift up the songs. They are incredibly tight with total control of their music.
The main act, Mr Ted, promising to play a lot of new stuff (and they do) .They hit us with a sharp cohesive wall of noise, still containing the whimsy in song subjects and wry observational lyrics that bounce from Moby Dick to stroking a cat that still makes me think of Zappa. They are comfortable on stage, confident in what they do and brilliant. There’s a more solid feel to the band musically, there is a strong metallic sheen to the new material and whilst the experimental edge to their sound is still fully engaged they also roll over the audience with a joyous wave of sonic abuse that could make anyone feel happy and want to dance. They seemed to suffer from some on stage sound problems but the noise that emanated from them didn’t suffer due to this. N ow they say they have to spend a while in the studio recording their new songs but hopefully we’ll see them back where they belong, live and on a stage.
Society of Losers, cheers folks, great to be back watching bands after so long and congrats on making it such a good one.
