The following might make this writer seem somewhat macabre, misrerabilist or even over sentimental. I love it when an artist goes somewhere ‘heavy’. I love it when they paint worlds with emotion, love and sensitivity. As the listener, you get to feel everything from a great distance. You can still on a comfortably and soak it all in without having to go through too much pain. All you have to do is keep quiet and listen.
KingFast does all the aforementioned with his song, ‘Under My Skin’. KingFast delivers some heavy words. Words that, on the surface, reveal like jagged knives and sharp spears. His lyrics, however, are tempered by his soulful and silk-like vocals. He opens with ‘you're like a cancer, spreading through me’ in the first verse but this contrasts towards the chorus with ‘oh I'm infected, you're under my skin’.
You hear the perplexed mind of a lover trying to make sense of a relationship, unsure of its trajectory. Of course, one can ingest this in many ways but I feel this track reveals something about connection. Seldom do you hear pop music doing something deep. It’s not often that you hear songs offering you some different. ‘Under My Skin’ paints the reality of attachment. The difficulty but also the joy of such.
This song is great song written by artist clearly influenced by the meta-modernisms of Childish Gambino and the pop sensibilities of Bastille. The song was wonderfully produced by Joe Mott of Mott & White productions as is available online from 09 October 2020,
