We are enjoying these Liverpool Psychedelic Society nights at Carnival Brewery. They provide a wider range of loosely psych bands (some more than others). Tonight is no exception.
The Blue Eyed Crows are making their debut as a full band and its big and loud. They play sledgehammer blues riffs amplified to the rafters with equally solid drums and bass all backing up one of the biggest voices I’ve come across in some time. They pull off their late 60s early 70s USA West Coast heavy rock extremely well and give it a few new twists and a real dark edge on occasion. Vocalist Emma raises the roof and the band follow. Not often you catch such a confident performance and then remember its the bands debut.
Farfisa are almost a polar opposite, they start off bringing their psych in from a gentler place. Its a while since I’ve seen them and there are changes though, the gentle drones are still there but being edged out on occasion by harder and heavier sounding guitars and insistent rhythms.
There’s a heavy eastern musical influence on display here and the spaced out musical sections grove with far away rhythms and there’s also a sitar used perfectly accompanying superb musicianship and constantly shifting patterns that keep your ears alert.
Farfisa pull off the trick of being incredibly tight musically but sounding loose in the best way, their music is organic and flows in a way that draws you closer to them and before long its possible to just relax and let their melodic repetitions flow over you.
