Manilarajj - From Violet Springs - Live Stream Review - 01 May 2021

Where do we begin, I first encountered Manilarajj as the guitarist in Metro Manilla Aide; the ultimate stoner rock band from Liverpool. His guitar playing was one of the things that pushed them into the upper echelons of bands to be watched.

The next time was at St Nicholas church off by the Liver Buildings were he presented a concept album with choirs, dancers and many outstanding musicians performing his debut solo album.’The Cold Explodes’.

A few years later and after much touring the world I caught him again as Mick Heads lead guitarist especially in the Studio 2 gig on Parr Street for the release of Micks much loved Adios Senor Pussycat album. Much in the background at that gig there was a time though when he was allowed to unleash a guitar solo so powerful and melodically perfect that jaws dropped and it blew the head off the audience.

He also runs Ghost Orchid Records and their website (link below) is the best place to find out more news.

The live stream harks more to the St Nicks gig, this is Manilarajj’s own music performed with a crew of top notch collaborators. This recorded gig is above most of the live streams I’ve seen over lockdown with its lavish production values, totally professional sound and visuals.

Musically there are throwbacks to the first album but there has been a development in style and complexity. As Manilarajj comments from the stage he deals with deep and often emotional issues and the music backs that up. Interspersed between the movements (I’m not sure songs is the right word) a spoken word performer introduces the concept of Violet Springs which seems to exist in Manilarajj’s mind as a place of peace, beauty and also a place to escape from.

The piano and key led pieces with superb playing from all musicians involved really is of a high standard, complex rhythms blend into each other flawlessly, passionate flurry;’s follow deep mournful parts and all are executed with skill and emotion.

Whilst you can hear the Nick Drake influences here, its definitely in the Prog camp musically and Floyd and Genesis (amongst many others) ooze through sonically. There’s parts were Battles seem to be an influence too.

It’s an outstanding show, Manilarajj’s voice has grown stronger, literally and musically. For me some highlights are when he grabs his white Telecaster and delivers all to brief blasts of sonic sculpture that soar to the rafters. He has an ability to capture and convey deep emotions with the aid of six strings.

Well worth watching.
