Oh Well Goodbye - The Choral Choir of the Capital - Single Review - 16 December 2020

‘Oh Well, Goodbye’ released this single back in September so naturally the ever on the ball Last Stop Sounds review it in December.

This is slick and sparse and lo-fi and wall of noise filled in equal parts. The track starts with a minimalistic guitars chiming over a gentle pulsing bass with a wash of synth sounds creating an evocative melancholy sound and this sits atop a truly hypnotic drum beat that transfixes.

There is an Echo and the Bunnymen feel to this but also a delicate hint of goth and when it unleashes itself something of the Jesus and Mary Chain. The calm is shattered by the sudden wall of guitar noise layers. Beautifully reverb swamped with fuzzed out melodies that are individually hard to pick out of the sonic framework yet working together to let the track soar. The vocals are deep and sonorous. They evoke a sadness and add further to the wistful feel of the track.

It’s a single that spends a s much time gazing at its shoes as it does ascending the heights. I was taken by it enough to make me seek out more of the bands music.
