Review: The Dry Retch, Biteback, The Vermin Suicides and Mark Murphy at Outpost Liverpool - Saturday

Fir

Thank you all for getting down to The Outpost in Liverpool on Saturday for another top rate gig from The Last Stop Sounds under the Funhouse at the Outpost flag

.

It’s not very often ya get all the bands on one gig from the local area, but this was definitely one to be at. Mark Murphy kicking off proceedings with a stunning acoustic set. Those who know him, will be aware of just how prolific he is, so many bands over the years, offering many ranges of musical prowess. This was the first time for me to see him as a lone singer on acoustic guitar, to say it’s a change from Crocodile God would be an understatement to say the least. We often place musicians in a bubble when used to seeing them play, however, when we see the other side to their extensive talent, it can often leave you speechless., this was a classic example.

After a quick turnaround, The Vermin Suicides give us their first proper gig in what seems like an age, Anton's vocal range never waning as he smashed through 12 songs in half an hour, the band doing themselves proud once again with a terrific set, as usual. Banging guitar work, with Aaron keeping the beat alive, a broad mixture of punk, reggae and a little bit dub thrown in for good measure. One of those bands that just seems to grow and grow, playing to the audience with grace and fun.

Up next, one of the most prolific punk legends in the north west, Steve and his old school punk rock outfit Biteback. A blistering set from the lads, a band close to my heart. They have had a few band member changes in recent times, which is hard to believe considering the power and tightness they have, the two Johns on bass and drums, bouncing off each other as Hocky blasts out resonating vocals whilst on lead guitar.

Lastly, our resident clan of antipodean miscreants in the form of the most excellent The DRY RETCH. Again, not much to say about this shower as I have probably sounded off about them many times before, however, yet again, the lads gave a fantastic set, blistering guitar work, deathly drum beats, accompanied by the Retchmeister on searing vocals. New material played to whet our eardrums, from their latest album, Operation Uranus. Old and new tunes mixed together, tells us that the latest album will be yet another blinding success.

Thanks to all who attended to make this a great start to gigging at The Outpost in 2022 and

to the bar staff and management, who always look after everyone here and truly know how to run a music venue. Last but not least, Ian doing his usual wizardry with the sound and lighting, spot on yet again mate. cheers and ciders ya MOFO's. Til the next time. Stay safe x
