Rose Tinted Eyes by Seprona, Single Review, 23 September 2020

Who remembers the noughties when 16th hi-hat verses and synthesisers became the mainstay of every indie band? I know I do, I still have most of those records up there on the shelf. The majority collect dust, but every now and then I’ll get Sam’s Town or You Could Have It So Much Better down and give them a blast.

‘Rose Tinted Eyes’ is a song that post-modernises the decade that proceeds it. This track does more than pay homage; it builds on the past and gives you something new. The song begins with a Richard Hawley-like verse and takes you up on a neon-light built rollercoaster. It climbs slowly, with its catchy tom-tom verses and funky bass-lines – filling every hole with cool hooks and riffs. The choruses descend up and ascend down, swirling round and landing on route back to the verses. It is during the ‘middle-8’ section that we get to imagine driving down the Miami beach, looking rather cool and cruising towards the sun.

‘R

ose Tinted Eyes’ is, to put it bluntly, it is a song that should have been placed in the GTA Vice City soundtrack. A sweet blend of electro, indie, cabaret and pop, all wrapped up nicely. As ever, this Liverpool five-piece have taken the winning Arctic Monkeys formula and remixed it. Whereas in the past they have treaded into ELO territory, for this, they have traded in Jeff Lynne for LCD Soundsystem. They even added a dash of Future Islands too. A fantastic song that proves that Seprona are more than capable of writing great pop tracks.
