RUIINS - Wearing White - Single Review - 25 November 2020

From the outset this is a blast, something refreshing about it, shiny and new. It begins with a fuzzed up guitar playing the main very catchy melody over some synths with a synth hook line floating in the air.

Then the singing starts, distinct and unstrained sounding falsetto like, throwing out hook laden line after line. There’s a simplicity about this track that hides RUIINS obvious songwriting skill.

Definitely 80s influences in there from Human League to Bronksi Beat but to my mind the emotional and well written lyrics take me to Pink Flamingo era Soft Cell. They sneak in some Cure based hookiness and some Jesus and Mary Chain bass work and it all adds up to a dizzyingly fresh tune that knocks the wind out of the lockdown.

Recorded in Liverpool’s Crosstown Studio by the duo of vocals from Lloyd Rock and Nik Kavanagh - formerly bassist with John Peel session regulars Ella Guru - providing the musical synth, drum machine and bass.

We enjoyed this one, looking forward to the bands second album which is due early in 2021.
