Time for some metal? Yup. The show is already on when we get to the dim red light basement in Jimmys. We catch the last minute of an acoustic duo called Chainsaw Haircut (we think). Sorry folks.
I’ve seen Scare Tactics a fair few times over the years, I even remember seeing a version of the band called Hollow Point or some such. They’ve always impressed me. Tonight, no different. They bang straight into their set with a minimum of fuss and hit it at full tilt straight from the off. The complex riffs with the two guitars weaving in and out of each other are given direction by solid bass playing and then given a raison d’être by the groove ridden thunderous drums. There are two vocals and yet their harmonies sound fuller than just two voices.
It’s all put together in an expert fashion. The playing is exemplary with not a note out of place and all delivered at breakneck speed. There’s something to be said for the sheer breathtaking skill a lot of metal bands show and Scare Tactics can awe just by listening to them.
Attic Theory hit another kind of groove. This is a big, perhaps retro, almost Stadium metal. I’m reminded repeatedly of older bands such as The Almighty, hints of Sonic Temple real Cult and despite trying to avoid saying it, Guns n Roses. But this stadium sound is morphed through a grunge filter and a more earthy and grounded sound.
It's a big band, there’s six of them with three (Yup three) guitarists and the sound the produce is full with some notable lead guitar playing all round.
