Three From Above (3FA) - In the Garage - Mini Album Review - 28 September 2020


Three From Above provided us with on of our easiest interviews ever. For a change we asked a band to walk us through their music and 3FA have a new mini-album out. So we let them give us a track by track narrative on what the songs are about. We sat back and relaxed whilst 3FAs Lewis and Harris provided the words.


1967: Recorded @Vulcan Studios (prod: Gary Thomas) - 2017


Lewis: This track came out of nowhere. I think we were channelling Idles and Fontaines DC at the time and I think we wanted a 3FA take on it. I am not sure where the title ‘1967’ came from but I just know it just suited the music. It’s a like a rocket or a meteor, or at least that’s what it felt like playing it.


Harris: 1967 Is essentially the most slapdash song we’ve ever made. The theme of the song surrounds divisions in westernised countries in the 60s coinciding with on-going pop culture at the time. Never actually played this song live, maybe one day we will do, it needs a bit of refining, but we’re extremely fond of this recording, probably because it’s nonsensical and rough.



SHOT BY BOTH SIDES: : Recorded @Vulcan Studios (prod: Gary Thomas) - 2017


Lewis: We kind of wanted to do a fast White Stripes/Dirtbombs/Guitarwolf tune and it just sort of developed into a weird Motorhead/Little Richard hybrid. It’s a bit of a rock ‘n’ roll/blues-y track that was great to play.


Harris: Shot From Both Sides is about a murder which took place on the Berlin Wall. I remember being very moved when I read about it, I just felt compelled to write a song about it. The victim was shot by both sides, the west and the east. He was only 18 years old. He had a sullen, melancholic face. It brought tears to my eyes. As time has gone by, even after the Iron Curtain fell, not much has changed. People are still dying in cold blood because of jingoism and posturing. Instrumentally, this song has many layers of Rock n Roll to it, with plenty of finesse and vigour.



PUNCH DRUNK LOVE: Recorded @Vulcan Studios (prod: Gary Thomas) – 2016


Lewis: Oh wow, our first ‘tune’. I love this song and the way it hybridises US/UK post-hardcore. I guess it’s the closest we will ever get to Brand New or Jimmy Eat World. I think it captures melody, energy and noise really well. I certainly hope we bring this one out for gigs.


HOLD ON: Recorded @ Orchid Studios (prod: Russell Cottier) – 2019


Lewis: I guess we wanted to write song that was literally was about holding onto something or someone. We liked the double chorus, we felt the message was simple enough and didn’t need to be anything more than that. We fused our love for post-hardcore and noughties indie for this track. It’s our Funeral for a Friend meets The Libertines



WHAT I WANT: (prod: Anders Johnsen) – 2016


Harris: We released WIW in 2018. We love this song; it’s never left the setlist since we brought it out. It was hard to find the words for how we feel about Brexit and how it was handled. We wanted to make a song for our friends in Europe (even the non-EU ones) about how much we love them, and how much they have improved our lives. It’s easy to tag this as a ‘remoaner anthem’ and in all honesty, we’re not really arsed. However, as time goes by we are swaying away from the political shtick and constructing a new direction with the band. But we’ll always be proud to stick up for what’s right.
